Can you please help identify this plant? It has a large, fleshy, tuberous root. Its small purple flowers are in a cluster which seems to come directly off the leaf. Stem has hair. We have tried to dig these plants out because they are quite invasive, but if any of the tuber is left, the plant returns. Any information will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's a member of the Boraginaceae, or borage family. Others might be able to determine it to species right now, I would need to see an image with it in flower. Possibly a Cynoglossum.

You've hit the nail on the head. Symphytum uplandicum I think. Could be S. asperum. Thanks very much for the quick i.d.
