My parents Monkey tree is turning brown slowly from the bottom up. Also some sap leeking from trunk. I have found numerous other peoples posts with the same problem on this website. I have not found an answer as to the disease this may be. The trees eventually die. Other posts I have found are-http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=4559 http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=10361 http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=8741 I am just trying to find out if there is away to save the tree?
Can you post a photo? It is normal for the lower branches to die off and drop, leaving a bare trunk. This happens even with perfectly healthy trees in the wild: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:IMG_6492_monkey_puzzle.JPG There is only a problem if the die-off reaches the top of the tree so there are no green branches left.
I had a neighbor that lost 2, well established 25 foot tall Monkey Puzzle trees. One was lost and the second one, the following year. They had been healthy since being planted as one gallon seedlings and inexplicably turned brown over several months. I was at a lost as to what could have happened and no one was able to offer any explanations. Hopefully this doesn't happen to you parents tree.
