I have just cleared ivy from around the base of a tall monkey puzzle tree. now i am finding that there were geranium plants under there. in trying to clear these, I am finding a mat of roots right under the top of the soil, about 2 inches thick. i assumed they were from the geranium, but now i am wondering if they are from the tree. i know that this tree has a deep tap root, but might it also have shallow lateral roots?

Yes. All trees have shallow lateral roots.
