We found this in the Arrowhead region of Northern Minnesota. It was in a mixed Red Pine, White Pine, Balsam, and Spruce forest. We would love any thoughts on what it might be.

It featured Red/brown stems, leaves fuzzy, slightly toothed and pinnate, 10 tall, stems have fleshy tips with pink veins, alternate branching, leaf scar has a prong, woody at base. Some of the stems near the tips were fleshy, almost like a succulent.

This was found on a trip documenting an area that is planned to be clearcut in the Echo Trail Project.

Let me know if you have any other questions, or contacts that might help us answer this.

    Thanks

The weird stems are a disorder caused by a fungal infestation.
