On holiday on the island of Madeira last week I came across two interesting shrubs that no-one seemed to be able to identify locally. They were both growing in the village of Santana which (according to Wikipedia) is at an altitude of 1,889 feet and Latitude of 32°48' N. One plant was in a normal garden the other in a sort of "bus stop" area - nothing fancy. The first plant has very unusual leaf and that is what caught my eye. I show two photos of the actual bush (photos 1 and 6) plus a photo of each side of a sample leaf that is a few days old. Four photographs. The second plant has an interesting "pine-cone" looking-type material along the stem with a flower emerging out of one of the stems. Two photographs, numbers 4 and 5. Any ideas?
