None of my gardening books were sufficient to help me identify this plant. I think it's beautiful and I don't often come across a plant that is all purple with absolutely no green foliage.

I would love to know more about this plant as i am currently trying to landscape my garden making the most of indigenous plants that don't require much water.

I live in Cape Town close to the mountain and if anyone has some good ideas for gardening tips, I'd love to hear them and of any other recommended sites.

    Many thanks

Are you sure it is a South African native species?

It looks like a type of Tradescantia to me, a New World genus, of which there are numerous ornamental cultivars widely grown elsewhere, some selected for purple foliage.
