My son sent this photo from a friend's garden, asking if I know the name. 'Dock' sprang to mind but when I went to check online I couldn't find a photo showing red splotches in the middle of the leaves so I'm not so sure. I know there are 100s of species of Rumex but is this one of them? Thanks.
You were certainly on the right track, Silver surfer. After a very convoluted search, I finally found the name of the plant my son was asking about. It’s botanical name is Persicaria maculosa. Common names include lady's thumb, spotted lady's thumb, Jesusplant, and redshank. Persicaria maculosa - Wikipedia E-Flora BC Atlas Page (Leaves usually with a purplish spot near midlength . . . ) I remember using the seedy buds from it to decorate mudpies when I was a kid. Definitely a weed.
