I was hoping someone could tell me what these are. They were found growing wild in central Alberta, and they're such a fascinating shape. Unfortunately I don't know what the plant looks like as they were brought to me, but the flower is so unusual that I hope someone will be able to recognize it on the flowers alone. They are about 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" across.
Agree with Poetry to Burn. It is an Aquilegia, common name columbine. They are examples of the gorgeous long spurred type, which come in a variety of colours. They are a very popular flower here in gardens. Many hybrids have now been given names... such as Aquilegia Remembrance or McKana hybrid. http://www.perennialfavoritesnursery.com/Images/Natives/Aquilegia Remembrance Columbine.jpg http://images.google.com/imgres?img...n-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&sa=N&um=1
