i think i planted seeds for the first one and that it's biennial, or maybe perennial yet needs two years to bloom as it was there last year - only got about 6-8 inches tall and didn't bloom...seemed to be almost evergreen, too, here in 6b then there's the second one. again, it may be something from seeds i put out two years ago...may have grown last year and didn't get tall enough for me to see it. they're about in the spot where i did plant seeds...this one has pricklies and the flowers seem to be done with - except for that one that's still got a couple petals on it. can't find my note sheet of what seeds i planted or i'd just look them up myself :) thanks for the assist!!
oh, here's some add'l pics of the first one...it got a bit taller in the past couple weeks and i also got a better shot of the leaves...
*tips hat to saltcedar* thanky very much! the garlic mustard - hmm, maybe the seeds were marked wrong? or is this something the birds may have left? raspberry, huh?? really?? cool!!
oooohhhhh. the garlic mustard is a no-go (invasive) and i gotta get rid of it. wish i'd posted the pics i took last fall...i would have known i could pick the leaves and eat them this spring (and then get rid of the plant). too late for that now!
The Blueish tint to the stems make me think of Blackcap Raspberries (Rubus occidentalis). If so, they aren't as prolific as the red, but will grow just about anywhere and require less water. I don't think they are native but have naturalized quite handily. Mine were all gifts from the birds, but they didn't plant them were I wanted, so I just moved 'em. barb
i took another look at the rubus and i see a few more canes growing - they're coming over from the neighbors yard. TONS of stuff is coming over from the neighbors yard - forsythia, honesuckle, thistle, pokeweed, mimosa tree, vinca, some other viney thing, poison ivy. he was in his 90's and died last summer. i would do some work back there in the thicket (and yeah, it DOES qualify as a thicket) because his family didn't do diddly to help him out. now the daughter is living in the house and we spoke the other day about it...she's going to have one of her kids come and do something about clearing it out. i have to tell her to leave the raspberry!!
