1,2,3- a tree hanging over my fence so I can’t get great photos. Most of the flowers are gone now but I was barely able to get the photo I did. It is spreading all over my yard. Wondering if I’ll let one grow. It is near another massive tree in the neighbors yard so I can’t see the trunk or what it really looks like.
4,5- not much to say but it’s about 3 feet tall, tender not woody
6,7,8- same bush, in a very neglected area of the yard. I can barely tell where these, the butterfly bushes, and blackberries end and begin. Trying to decide if I’m going to chop it down with the blackberries.

    thanks!

    My guess:
    Padus (cherry)
    Sambukus (elderberry)

    I agree with Sulev

You’ve also got buttercup next to purple leaves (often considered a weed - it spreads easily and takes over cow and horse pastures)

QUESTION - are these recent photos ?

I ask cuz i am surprised the Elderberry fruit hasn’t ripened to whatever color it turns out to be (generally red or blue - I am not an expert on your Calif species)

Here in coastal BC - the elderberries have been red ripe for a couple of wks

The dark leaved plant is a persicaria, possibly Persicaria microcephala ‘Red Dragon’. It's either that or a similar cultivar.

The tree is a sweet cherry (Prunus avium)

Yes those buttercups are driving me up the wall. They are very hard to pull up and everywhere. When we moved into this house they had put down all the wood chips, to hide the blackberry jungle I’m sure, and buttercups, blackberries and ivy are coming up at all the edges of the bark. I don’t want to poison and I’d rather be able to just mow them. I’ll leave down those chips and plastic for awhile and maybe it will kill some of them by next year when I get chance to really start gardening. Although being such an old house and finding all kinds of neat mature plants I’m also curious what they covered that I would have loved to save.

I took photos a few days ago. It’s quite cold here in Eureka, CA. Although I’m inland a mile or so we sit on the Pacific Ocean and rarely see 70 degrees and have tons of fog in spring and summer. I wouldn’t be surprised if it fruits quite late. That is one of the only bunches of fruit at all. It is definitely a pacific red elderberry now that I have looked it up but I don’t think it will load up with fruit like the photos I saw. Too bad it’s not the tasty blue ones!

Thanks for your help, any suggestions on those buttercups is welcome!

Thanks a bunch! Looks like you are correct. I think I’ll be trimming those branches to the fence line!

thanks! When I saw cherry I was excited but looks like these are for the birds :)

I think you are correct! Thanks :)
