    Dear readers,

Could anyone confirm the ID of this yellow jasmine? Tentatively, it could be Jasminum mesnyi or Jasminum humile. What is confusing is the fact that J. mesnyi is fragrant according all online sources whereas J. humile is mildly fragrant. This jasmine is not at all fragrant (as confirmed by three independent people who are familiar with this plant) but it looks very similar to the former. Is it some other type of jasmine then? It flowers profusely in tropical winter. We are making a small database of ornamental plants of Pakistan (about 300 plants so far) and this jasmine is eluding identification.

This is J. mesnyi. It is easily told apart from J. humile by its 6 to 8 petals that are widely ovarlapping, as opposed to the more regular 5 petals of J. humile.

Looking at the Flora of China key at http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=116771 I am reminded also that J. humile has alternate leaves while those of J. mesnyi are opposite (as in most jasmines).

    J. mesnyi has no odor at all that I can detect.
