I've read the description of a hackberry but somehow the leaf shape seems a bit off. These berries are yellowish-orange inside, kind of dry, with one seed. That also matches the description of the hackberry. I want to get some insight from an expert though before I taste it! Also, these have been ripening since early July, and I've read that hackberry doesn't ripen until October or November...Does anyone know what this is and if I can eat it?

    A species of Cotoneaster.

Edible (i.e., not poisonous), but not worth eating, bitter, sour, astringent, rather dry. If you collected a lot you could try making jam from them, but I'd not bother. Best just left for birds to eat (though even birds tend to leave them for 'famine food' when there's nothing else much available).
