Hi. I'm thinking accurate identification of plants will help or inspire me to be a smarter landscaper. So any help is much appreciated. I've tried a couple of online flow chart type tools for identifying plants. With the simple ones I couldn't get positive results, and the complicated ones were overwhelming. I don't yet understand things like palmate and pinnate. These plants are about 6 foot tall. The photos were taken in Dallas Texas in January. I'm not sure when this plant flowers. I've included photos of the front and back sides of leaves and of the bark of the shoots.
AgriJoe, welcome to the forums. I'm sure someone else will come up with the ID. There are some interactive keys that are helpful in showing you what they terms mean. One day I'd like to do up a resource describing and recommending some; right now I'm still collecting locations in this thread: Search for IDs by characteristics. You can check out some of those. I bought the Botany in a Day book that was recommended in the first reply in that posting. It was very helpful. Once you're given IDs in your postings, it will help you to be able to find the posting again, as you can't remember everything you were told. If you give your postings a better description, like a few words to describe what the plant looks like, instead of "I'd Appreciate the Help", then when you look over all your postings here, you'll be able to tell which one was the posting for the plant you want the name of again. Even if you called this "Shrub, red fruits", you could probably find it again more easily.
To Wendy, Thanks very much for the helpful tips! I'll post, in the thread you linked, the links to the online ID systems I've used.
