    Any ideas of what this huge guy is?
    100ft elevation off of puget sound, close to rainforest climate but not quiet that wet. next to fir and cedars

    Looks like an Artemisia.

    What sort of environment was this photographed in?

    If it was over here, I'd say Mugwort Artemisia vulgaris. If that is naturalised in WA, then that's what it'll likely be.

    Here is a leaf, maybe Artemisia vulgaris L. but not quite? The leaves seem to have sharper ends.

    OK thank you all.
    My I.D. reference is an old copy from taxonomy of vascular plants in 1978, Hitchcock and Cronquist Flora of the Pacific Northwest. Any recommendations for a new version for old mind that has forgotten most of what he learned?

    That's still the reference used by many, there hasn't been anything to replace it that covers the whole region. There have been some fine field guides published since, but none of these are comprehensive of course.
