http://www.king5.com/news/environment/Yakima-beekeepers-discovery-stirs-up-research-138585199.html I'm not very good at computer stuff so the above link may not work. But......... I noticed a news report in the Seattle King 5 news on-line about a Bee Keeper accidently learning some hopefully good things about over winter Bee Keeping. barb (Goody! It did work for Me)
It's all over the Seattle channel 5 news. Wash State Univ. is going to try to recreate what the Bee Keeper did in Yakima. They rented an empty fruit storage building to over winter the bees in. The building had controls that fed in certain gasses for the fruit preservation. Now they (WSU) is going to recreate the venture to see what and why. Maybe they, the Bee Keepers, have stumbled on a way to keep more of our Honey bee population alive. barb
Just a bit of an update here. Rather than create a whole new thread, I'm just adding this to Barbara's posting. A New Threat to Honey Bees, the Parasitic Phorid Fly Apocephalus borealis This second link is from January 5, 2012. The above is also from early January, but a bit further in the detailed info. Fly Parasite Turns Honey Bees Into 'Zombies' There were several others in early Jan, but they basically are carying the same info from the Discovery link. ------------
