Help with identifying this tree?

    Hello, I'm not sure what kind of tree this is. It's very very prickly on the trunk and branches and the ants love it. I want to cut it back, but do not want to damage it.... anyone know what it is and when is the best time to cut it back?

    Prickly Ash Aralia spinosa
    Family: Araliaceae

    The common one here is Aralia elata.
