I have several of these plants and some friends think that I should remove it, but don;t want to do anything before identifying it (don't know if it flowers: picture is from last year). Any help?

Certainly a mulberry; the leaf shape suggests either Red Mulberry Morus rubra or a hybrid between that and White Mulberry M. alba.

Your friends are right. Remove it ASAP. Its a nasty invasive weed tree (not a bush).

Do it before the weasel goes pop!!

If it is true Red Mulberry, it is a Nebraska native, and one to cherish and retain. If it is White Mulberry, or a hybrid, then off with its head. Unfortunately, distinguishing hybrids isn't easy!

Wait for it to fruit, then.

Thanks. I have these small plants (or trees) growing in different places: One is coming out of the basement window well, other grew through a semi-rotten timber in a retaining wall. Would that happen with a Red Mulberry or only with invasive species?

Could happen with either - they're pretty robust trees.

the thought does just cross my mind that a basement window well is a bad place for a tree no matter what kind it is...

You are absolutely correct KarinL, and I'll remove them (one from each window well). What a species!
