Help identifying these 2 plants

I would like to identify these 2 plants, found in a garden in New Haven CT.

The first jpg is of a small (12-14") plant, that has a very thorny stem, the leaves are somewhat glossy. Anyone know this one?

The second jpg is from a shrub. I can't remember seeing 2 different leaf forms on the same plant. Any ideas on this one?

2. Looks like Morus alba. Common name Mulberry.

First one might be a rose.

 

I don't think so.. the thorns are small, very sharp and all the way up the main stem and even on the leaf stem. There was what looked like a bud on the top, surrounded by a few leaves in a rosette.. if that helps anyone more..

 

The first one could be a Rubus.

 

#1 is Rosa rugosa. This has dense, bristly thorns, different to most other roses.
