help identify forest plant

    I came across this while walking in the woods behind my house last week. (I live in western Massachusetts.) I've never seen one of these before and I haven't had any luck trying to look up what it might be. It was fairly small, perhaps about 5" (for size reference, an acorn can be seen in the second picture.)
