In The Garden: Garden Plant Colombia

    Can anyone tell me what this plant is? I've only seen it planted in gardens and I don't know if it native or not. A curious feature is that while Thunbergia alata will smother everything around it when present it only barely invades this plant.

    Foliage is not that of a bromeliad.

    looks like it could be some sort of calathea? Calathea crotalifera maybe?
