I recently bought a house with some cleared land beside it, mostly sandy and dry soil, in Nova Scotia... It is almost entirely covered by this plant, I thought it was some kind of fern, but today I noticed it smells very nice so I'm thinking it might be something else. Or are some ferns aromatic?? The plants stand about 2 feet tall.
    Any ideas?

I can't be sure from the photo, but it sounds like sweetfern, which isn't a fern at all.

Thank you so much for the quick response! I looked it up and I think that's what it is. I thought it might be some invasive species about to swallow my entire yard! I'm glad that it is friendly, actually more than friendly. A blessing to have so near my house.
    Thanks,
    Julie
