Hi. I'm new here and new to the U.K. We're renting a home with this tree growing in the garden... it climbs the gate and looks like it's been a bit neglected. If I can figure out what it is, perhaps I can give it the proper care. I appreciate your help!!
The red fruit look like Rose hips. http://images.google.com/images?q=r...1I7SUNA_en-GB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi
Thank you Silver Surfer! After searching rose hips, perhaps it is a Dog Rose? It's rather overgrown; I assume I can prune it after the hips drop?
They won't drop and will stay throughout the winter (some birds may be interested in them). If there are young stems, you should leave only them and cut off most if not all old branches with berries in spring.
Not a dog rose, that has different leaves and produces larger, differently shaped hips in much smaller clusters. This is a musk (Sec. Synstylae) rose or a hybrid derived from one.
