Trying to find a bush I had near my yard growning up in north Jersey. A bush/shrub with dark green leaves and had puffy flowers almost like tiny carnations, I think orange but maybe it was yellow? Anyone know what this could be and where I could get one?
I have no idea. I'm going to swing by the old neighborhood and see if its still around. if so, i'll see if i can get a photo and post it. thanks for responding.
Kerria japonica comes to mind. Are the stems a lime green in the winter? http://www.hort.uconn.edu/plants/k/kerjap/kerjap1.html Newt
GBonnett, you are so very welcome! I just noticed where you are. I grew up in Monticello and went to OCC in Middletown many, many moons ago. Say 'HI' to 'my' mountains for me when you see them. Newt
Newt, Small world, isn't it? Since I now live on a mountain in Blooming Grove, it'll be my pleasure! PS do these flowers bloom in orange also? is there a similar flower in orange, or is my mind playing tricks on me?
Newt, Small world isn't it? I now live on a Mtn in Blooming Grove, so I'll be sure to pass along your regards! BTW, does this flower come in orange? Is there a similar flowering bush in orange, or is my mind playing tricks on me?? G
I thought of the 'Plena' kerria cultivar also but wouldn't describe the flowers as "tiny carnations".
G, I can't think of a shrub with orange flowers at the moment, but I do know that the double flowered variety has flowers that are a deeper gold, almost orange. Maybe that's what you saw? Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' http://perso.orange.fr/creationsjcj/Kerria-Japonica_Pleniflora.jpg That's the one I used to have. Is that what you saw? Newt
It was over 30 years ago I saw it last, this looks exactly like the flower but yellow. I could swear they were a true orange, but I was around 8 at the time. I intend to get one of these bushes and grow it and see if it is orange in some stage then turns yellow perhaps. Thanks. G
Ah, the truth will out! Memories do cloud with time. I'm sure if it was blooming in late spring this was your flower. Here's the different cultivars I found. The only one I know of that's the double flower is the one I mentioned. http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/2plants.htm#kerria There are bright orange azaleas. Azalea 'Gibralter' http://images.google.com/images?um=1&tab=wi&hl=en&q=Azalea 'gibralter' Azalea 'Gibraltar' which I grow in my zone 7 garden. http://images.google.com/images?svn...&ct=result&cd=1&q=Azalea+'gibraltar'+&spell=1 More azaleas. http://www.daytonnursery.com/Encyclopedia/Trees_Shrubs/Azalea.htm So I guess I'd ask what time of year and where do you remember it blooming? Was it in the woods or someone's yard? Was it located near where you live now or in another state? The more we know the easier it will be to try and find what you are looking for. Newt
It was on a bush bordering someones yard we used to pick the flowers on our way home from school. I'm not sure if it was late spring or early fall. My guess is early fall. NOrth Jersey, (Bergen County). there was another neighbors tree whos flowers we'd pick on our way home also, the tree has long gone but maybe I'm confusing the colors. The flower you fowarded really looks right, we thought they were tiny carnations, just the color throwing me off now. I will go by there on my way home from work, next week, maybe the bush is still there but wont be flowering yet, right?
Double forms of pomegranate are like orange carnations, but this persists in mild climates only. Not fully hardy even in Seattle (USDA 8).
G, take your camera with you and try and take a closeup of the leaves, any buds and one of the entire plant. Newt
