Can anyone identify this flower with a square stem? I found it in kind of a disturbed area so I'm thinking it could be an alien species.
Looks like something in the Melostomataceae (the triple veining in the leaves is the giveaway). Compare with Tibouchina, which has very similar flowers (and good luck, there are about 350 species in that genus alone. It's a big family.)
Lorax is correct about the family, see http://www.latin-wife.com/Colombian-Flowers-/Arthrostemma-ciliatum.asp
That certainly seems to be the plant. I am quite surprised since I guessed it to be an alien. Thank you very much.
