Hibiscus rosa-sinensis – Chinese Hibiscus. Not sure what the variety is but looks to me like a form of ‘Brilliant’ or ‘San Diego Red’. They are indeed a fantastic tropical plant but are very susceptible to cool weather. For us here they have to be brought indoors or placed in a greenhouse before the temps get down to 35°. Otherwise we face a losing battle with these because of our cold weather. Most people around where I am grow this hibiscus as an annual, whereas grown in most parts of Southern California it makes a very nice shrub for landscape purposes with little fear of this plant being nipped or killed outright by the cold.
