    Hi Everyone

I took this picture in my Mum's back garden this Easter, but neither she nor I know what it is. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Looks like a Berberis - someone else might know it to species.

Berberis darwinii. One of the commonest barberries in gardens here.

The fruits are also noticeable, present at this time in Seattle.

If it weren't for the squarish leaves just visible it might have been another, there are others grown with similar flowers.

Very rare to see other species with similar flowers over here, though. The next most commonly planted evergreen Berberis with flowers in similar pendulous racemes is B. × stenophylla (B. darwinii × B. empetrifolia), which has bright yellow (not orange-yellow) flowers.

Depends on the cultivar. Several, including

    'Claret Cascade'
    'Coccinea'
    'Crawley Gem'
    'Etna'
    'Semperflorens'

    have orange flowers.

South American evergreen barberries are far more prominent in UK than over here, where most areas cannot grow them. Even where possible, such as in parts of my region the selection is pitiful compared to over there.

I have another picture taken from the next day (much duller weather) from the same plant if that helps?
