I recently bought a house on Long Island, NY and my neighbor has a huge tree that is dropping what looks like blackberries all over my deck and backyard on one side. The berries are attracting flies, staining my deck, tracking inside my house, and making my dogs sick. Does anyone have a suggestion about what to do about this? I can't ask my neighbor to cut down his tree, but these berries are really causing me much mess and distress. Here I finally have a little yard of my own for me and my dogs and I don't want to go out there? Does anyone know what they are and how long these berries will continue to fall? Thanks.

Sounds like a mulberry tree. They are notorious for causing a mess and staining walkways and such. Aside from removing the tree or taking down the branches that are over your deck, I don't know what you could do.

I'd doubt that the berries are what is making the dog sick, unless they have fermented and become alcoholic. Dogs are well able to digest fruit like mulberries; before domestication by man, fruit was an important component of the canine diet.

Legally you can, and should, trim the branches on your side of the property line.
