I am looking for something, that, when mushed in your hand, makes a crackle or crunching sound. Something that is not broken down very easily, so that you can do the crunching sound several times.
I also am looking for something that is non toxic to animals and people.
    Thanks in Advance.

Immediately, I think of conifers. Many pine cones would hurt the hand squeezing it, but some can take a bit of abuse. Eastern white pine, Pinus strobus, has very sappy cones, but you can toast them in a cool oven and it will crystallize. Good for killing off bugs and grubs, too. Spruce cones are also squeezable.
