Does anyone know what species of Bonsai this is? Also, I am in Burnaby, would this tree live here? http://www.ezcafes.com/forum/topic/0/2/0/0/9
It might be an elaeagnus multiflora ('Goumi'), a type of Russian Olive (though not an olive at all). It's often used for bonsai, if you type "elaeagnus bonsai" into a google image search, you'll find a number of images for comparison. Hardy to Zone 5, I've grown a few from seed but they can take a year+ to germinate; ought to be locally available, if not direct, then via special order.
Russian olive is customarily Elaeagnus angustifolia. In addition to Goumi, E. multiflora has also been called Natsu-gumi, Longipe bush, Mupan-hsia, and Cherry elaeagnus.
BTW, Ron B, do you think the plant in the photo is indeed the subject at hand? I could not tell for certain. My point, as all those who know me will attest, is on the top of my head; but while we're on common names, we might well add Cherry Silverberry, Ch'Iao Erh Su, and Hu T'ui Tzu. Kind regards.
