This plant was in the yard when we bought the house several years ago. I moved to to a place with more sun and it has taken off this year but remains scrawny. It gets incredibly beautiful cream-white magnolia-like flowers in the spring - one in the center of each cluster of leaves. Does anyone know what it is?

I believe Ron made a correct ID. This tree does not have a super bushy habit. It might grow more lush with a grass free, mulched area around it's base.

Thank you so much! No one I've asked recognized it. I'm way behind in my yardwork due to surgery but I'll get this taken care of.
