Does anyone know what this is?

    Vista, CA USA
    It is a tree growing in the middle of a flowering shrub. The flowers are pink, very fragrant and smell like pineapple guava fruit. I live in Vista, CA and it is January.

    Looks different to me, starting with the fact that the inflorescence is not bracted.

    Yes. That's why I said "or closely related species." They're not always easy to differentiate from just a photo.

    Maybe S. dorisiana, which does have a smell somewhat like pineapple.

    The individual flowers and the leaves aren't especially similar, either - I wouldn't be surprised if this was from an entirely different section of the genus than S. involucrata.

    And that's assuming it's definitely a Salvia (S. dorisiana produces different flowers also).
