I live in Ottawa, Canada and was surprised to find growing amongst my flowers the attached plant. I let it grow because it was so green and healthy and was very surprised at the immense size and the unusual flower head as you will see from the attachments. I suspect it may have been in a packet of seeds -- I did plant several Daturas but none turned out like this one. Can anyone help? Thanks,Veronica

Looks like Nicotiana sylvestris. I planted this in my backyard this year as it grows quickly and gets big. Did you notice a lovely jasmine-like fragrance emanating from the flowers in the evening?

They probably haven't been in your back yard.

    Hello Eric,

I've just come in after looking to my Nicotiana s. (?) There is a slight scent; I cannot place it but it is not unpleasant. The plant is even more attractive in the evening and all the flowers are erect, thankfully we are enjoying a particularly warm start to Oct. Will I be able to save seeds? or, because it has just started blooming will the frost get there first? Thanks, Veronica

    Dear Ron,

Enlighten me, I do not understand your reply being new to the forum. Veronica

    Hello VMT,

It is a tobacco, so the fragrance you are getting is probably the leaves which are rather punget. The flowers emit fragrance only at night. You should get seeds. They are very tiny. If not they are commonly available.

Ron is a regular on the forums. That was a joke. I said I grew them in my back yard. Did you notice the lovely fragrance? He said you probably have not been in my back yard.

Thanks Eric, and I hope I didn't upset Ron. Veronica
