At first I thought that this was a cyclamen but I can't seem to find one that has this rich violet (blue) color and the flower doesn't seem quite right either. But the leaves and stalk look like a cyclamen.

Environment: Switzerland, edge of field in moderate shade, near stream bank. Taken on 27 March.

    Thanks

Definitely a Viola (interesting that you mentioned violet...)

Cyclamen end up with all the petals folded back like formally presented table napkins, with most of the reproductive parts hidden up inside. They never present a "cute little pansy face" like the violet shown is doing.

I really should have known better. I have a massive cyclamen on my windowsill that's been blooming since October. And it's really big, I didn't know they could get that big.

I know that cyclamen are native to Switzerland and I guess I was hoping for something more exotic than a viola. Either way, I was very happy with the photo.

    Thanks
