Found 2 young trees in woods, quite possibly sprouts from same source. One is tall, straight, about 10-15ft but too young to have bark. The other has been clobbered by fallen tree, is lying on its side, and is old enough to have bark. Location is Appalachians in N. Virginia, rocky wood, mostly greenstone so maybe neutral to slightly alkaline. I am not familiar with leaves like these and closest I could come was Castanea dentata. I understand that chestnuts are usually/often associated with layer of Ericaceae shrubs which are absent in this area most likely because soil is not acidic. Could these leaves be those of Castanea?

    Thank-you!

Yes, Castanea; whether C. dentata, or another introduced species or hybrid, I don't know.
