I found a couple of these growing at the bottom of my garden following remodeling work a few years ago and transplanted them to a safe place because they looked intriguing: a single vertical stem with perfectly symmetrical leaves in groups of four at 90 degrees They were about six inches tall.

They have thrived and over the last few years have grown to be four to five tall. Last year both plants started generating side shoots, as you can see in the photos. This year - for the first time - they have produced what I take to be flowers (although they are green).

Attached photos show the overall plant, and leaf and flower detail.

Can anyone tell me what they are?

    Thanks!!

    Nick

    Thank you Lila!

    - and so fast, too!

I don't care if some people DO call it an "invasive weed" - it is an absolutely fascinating plant and I am enjoying being finally able to learn more about it - something I could not have done without knowing its name.

    Much appreciated.

    Edit:
...I just noticed that you are in Hungary, and indeed most of the web info I found is from Europe. Since I am in California, I am wondering if it is a common European plant that has somehow got transplanted (I have never seen one here before). Any thoughts?

It is native to the Mediterranean, and an invasive weed in many other areas (including California).

The sap can also cause nasty skin burns.

Yes, I have been reading about its poisonous qualities. I had no idea! Now I am wondering if perhaps I should prevent (or at least limit) its reproduction.
