Can you help identify this large "weed" with berry clusters?

    We have two of these large weeds growing along the side of our home. The homeowner has allowed them to grow because she thinks they look pretty... But I'm just wondering what exactly they are? They've reached over 6 feet in the course of the summer and the stalks have varied in color from green to deep purple...

    We live in south-central Pennsylvania, in the Northeast United States.

    We also have a higher population of Cardinals this year in our yard... I bet they keep coming over for the berries. :)
