Hello, I am looking for someone to help me identify this plant. I need to prune them and I am not sure when in the best time to do this. I would also like to know if I can I prune them every so often or just once a year. - TX Brian - Anacortes

Cotoneaster. What effect are you trying to get from the pruning? You could just cut them down low and start them over from the bottom, I'd probably do that - unless you want to retain their current stature or this year's fruit crop.

It's still early enough in the year that they would probably make a little recovery growth before winter, especially if watered during the rest of the summer.

RE Effect: I am trying to shape them so the two bushes look like they have one "rounded" top. I will get on youtube now and see what I can find out about cotoneaster. I sure appreciate your help!

If you are going to continue with the topiary style just clip them over with shears.
