I like the little plants but these are driving me crazy. Someone needs to put out a small weeds of dry areas book. Pictures from Vernon BC. If it helps, both pictures were taken in May.

First one, I think the genus is Lappula (stickseed), but I can't decide on a species. Or rather Lappula squarrosa is supposed to be in the area, but I don't think it looks right. Unfortunately, I see no seeds so I don't even know if I'm on the right track. Insets are mostly for size, my fingers aren't that big!

Second one, I'm just curious (I haven't tried to ID it enough to be going crazy yet). So for bonus points... It has no basal leaves (or more likely they died earlier in the year). Its everywhere on the roadside so I'm assuming its a weed. About 10 cm tall.

For the first one, you might also consider Hackelia...?

For the second one, perhaps compare to Lithospermum arvense?
