    The commonest species in cultivation in UK is Callicarpa bodinieri from China; the American species doesn't grow well in our climate.

    Note that the berries are inedible for humans (and birds don't like them much either, 'famine food').

    Callicarpa usually require cross-pollination. However, a percentage of C. bodinieri seedlings in British cultivation fruit well without this having occurred - if the mystery shrub has no other specimens (of different clones) nearby to cross with then that reinforces it being C. bodinieri. With a one of these variants having been named, cloned and put on the general market being 'Profusion'.
