A common plant? (NC/VA)

    Hi,

    Can someone tell me what this? Found in NC mtns by side of road (first pic). Second, looks like same genus but different species? Found in VA. Both are flowering now in northern VA. I thought it was a large phlox but leaves went from opposite on bottom to alternating on top.

    Thank-you! I still think the first plant might be a different species though because of where it was located.... and the leaf shape and "hairiness" of the stem but they are both phlox! Thanks for confirming!
