Hi, I met the following ferns during my wanderings in the rainforest in the area of Paraty, Brazil in January 2010. Hopefully someone can help me to ID them.. Thanks! 2 pictures of each.. Myriam
Thank you Tony! I have searched in Flora do Brasil, no Dicranopteris pectinata is listed but 3 other species of Dicranopteris! http://floradobrasil.jbrj.gov.br/20...te=&phyto=&endemic=-1&nativa=-1&last_level=25 Finding the genus was a big help! I can do further searching now.. For Elaphoglossum there are still 73 species recorded, so I better keep it as Elophoglossum sp.. http://floradobrasil.jbrj.gov.br/20...te=&phyto=&endemic=-1&nativa=-1&last_level=25 Thanks for your help! Myriam
I found it! One was eliminated because not being reported in the area I found it, so there were only two left, after careful comparison I found that it has to be Dicranopteris nervosa. http://search.babylon.com/imageres....=1024&q=Dicranopteris nervosa&babsrc=adbartrp
Dear bonitin: the first two photos (terrestrial plant) are Gleichenella pectinata (Willd.) Ching (Gleicheniaceae). The next two (the epiphytes with adherent rhizomes) are Microgramma vacciniifolia (Langsd. & Fisch.) Copel. and (the epiphytes with pending rhizomes) Microgramma geminata (Schrad.) R.M.Tryon & A.F.Tryon). Best wishes from Brazil!
Hi Vinicinus!:) Thank you so much for your reply! Sorry for the late response, I hadn't checked again as it was so long ago I had posted that thread. So great too you have given all the correct ID's! Thank you so much, Myriam (I am missing Brazil, I hope I can go back next winter!)
You're welcome, Myriam. It's very nice to take a look on some ferns sometimes... Greetings from Brazil, VinÃcius
Seems I was right on one, namely Dicranopteris pectinata = Gleichenella pectinata, but quite wrong about the Microgramma spp. - wrong family even! It appears that separating of D. pectinata into genus Gleichenella is increasingly accepted by pteridologists, judging from the references in the Tropicos database.
Thank you Tony! As far as I understand Dicranopteris pectinata became the synonym of Gleichenella pectinata? Myriam
Yes, if you accept that Gleichenella pectinata is the appropriate classification, then Dicranopteris pectinata is a synonym. They are different names for the same species.
Dear Tony: yes, pteridologists are accepting Gleichenella as a distinct genus, with several consistent differences between it and Dicranopteris and / or Sticherus, the two other genera found in neotropics. All the best, VinÃcius
