What is this tree?

    We live in calgary. this tree starts out with bright green leaves, and white bunches of flowers. the leaves turn this dark purple and it makes a few little purple berries.

    It also sends up runners around its trunk.

    What is it? are the berries edible?

    This looks like the Prunus virginia 'Schubert' that is used as a street tree in Vancouver. You can read about it here:

    Astringent berries that are ok in jams and sauces.
