Searching for (probably) extinct plant

    Hello.
    A friend told me about some (weird) plant that is currently extinct, but I couldn't find anything that matches the decription.
    It's a small (30 cm) shrub with big red compound leaves. It has big rose-like flowers, fruit is a drupe. Extinct in the 19th (or 20th, I don't remember exactly) century.
    I am probably being fooled, but still: is there any kind of plant that matches or looks like the description?
    I'm not an expert. Thanks in advance.

    Possible, for sure. If your friend is pulling your leg, it's not that extravagant a lie. There are way too many possibilities in hybrid plants because the description that sounds definite is actually too vague.

    Yes, tough one to answer. Given your description, though, I wonder if it is something in the Rosaceae.
