this tree is growing on our property in Bellingham, WA. The local nursery staff is stumped to id it. Will try to upload some pics of bark, tree, leaves, and nut.
Welcome to the forums! It is Davidia involucrata......commonly called Dove tree or hankerchief tree. Lucky you to have that on your land. Do look out for the flowers! https://davisla3.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/davidia-involucrata-flower.jpg davidia involucrata fruit - Google Search
Thank you so much. How fun. The late former owner of our property was a tree geneticist. We have just moved from PA to WA state, so are learning about a host of plants new to us. This one had stumped the locals I asked. The tree is about 40 ft high and 30 ft wide, so hope to see flowers in the spring. It's lovely even without them.
Ooh! How exciting. Don't do anything to your grounds ....until you know what other treasures you might have. Did the previous owner not leave a map/plant list for you? I am sure he will have made a record...it would be good to get a copy. Meanwhile do feel free to ask all of us here on UBC forums for more help.
Thank you so much. Unfortunately, the house was cleaned out except for the house architectural plans by the time we found it, so no plant lists. The dove tree is very near an umbrella pine and just in front of the house, so it seemed logical it was planted here purposefully. It will be an interesting spring for sure, watching what leafs out or blooms!
