I photographed this shrub in Mexico, on the coast of Jalisco. It was growing very close to the ocean, at sea level. The leaf was spiny, somewhat reminiscent of both holly and / or oak. Any ID suggestions greatly appreciated.

Looks to me like Quercus, one of the many evergreen species found in Mexico.

The foliage does, yes, but the fruit doesn't (and they do look to be genuine fruit, not insect galls).

That was my impression... That the leaves were somewhat oak-like but not the fruit. The leaves were very brittle and tough. In these photos the fruit was not yet mature (beginning of March), and about the size of a marble.

Oh dear, I admit I did not look at the 2nd shot that shows the fruit. Certainly not an oak.
