    Interesting.
They do appear very very similar.

Is there any reason you think it is Maddenia hypoleuca as opposed to Maddenia himalaica?

I tried to use the key in my 1st link which said..".Leaf blade abaxially densely pubescent at least on veins; branchlets densely pubescent."

As the twigs were very soft and hairy the key took me to no 4 which was M. himalaica.
However, I am rubbish at following these detailed keys.

    Any botanists .....HELP!

yes, it mentions in the key that the leaf blade when abaxially glabrous leads to hypoleuca...

"1 Leaf blade abaxially glabrous; branchlets glabrous or pubescent. (2)
+ Leaf blade abaxially densely pubescent at least on veins; branchlets densely pubescent. (4)

2 (1) Leaf blade abaxially whitish, glaucous, margin irregularly or mixed with doubly serrate; secondary veins 14–18 on each side of midvein."
