yuck brown flowers

i have a very old spirea i cut it back last year and got the old dead wood out of the middle looks good for folage but the flowers are still brown but lots of them how do i fix thanks

 

The spent flowers are brown?

The flowers stay on the vine I can't even pull them off only one flower was white
