We have quite a number of tomatoes started for spring planting and they have become tall and spindly, can we trim them to achieve larger lower plants or will this kill them, there are several different varieties, sweet 100's cherry and roma's ,christmas grapes. thats about it,any ideas?
Tie to stakes and make sure they have plenty of light and warmth. Do not expose to cool temperatures. If growing tips become yellowish and somewhat bleached-looking they have been chilled and will not perform fully.
Since tomatoes are one of the few plants which will grow roots on a submerged portion of the stem, you could replant them into different containers and bury the stems by either planting the seedlings deeper in their new pots or laying the plant down on its side and covering so that a lot of the stem with soil. The plants will turn upright within a few days is you use the lying down method. Anne
