We planted a laurel hedge about 3-4 years ago. During the past year or so one end of the hedge has started to yellow, has developed holes in the leaves and growth has been slow. The other end of the hedge is striving, dark green leaves, thick and healthy. Can anyone help?

Too wet, too dry or nutrient deficiency are first things to check. Holes probably shot hole fungus.

Those symptoms could also become if there is a possibility that some of the hedge may have been planted a bit too deep? Decay from dirt packed around the trunk can surely suffocate the sap flow, causing yellowing and holes to develop on the leaves. Also stunting the growth and leaving the foliage thin and spindly.

Check to see if you can see the root crown where the trunk flanges out, this should be just at or very slightly below the surface. Just one more thing to look for in finding your hedges problem.

    Jim.
