Last year I built two raised beds over what had previously been grass. I planted one with garlic in November. A few weeks ago, however, upon plucking out a clove that was growing too close to another, I noticed it was riddled with holes, and had a couple of wireworms on it. I began pulling up more cloves, and each one was being devoured. I've never had a problem with wireworms before, but I've done my research now.

My question is: is there any vegetable I can grow in these beds that will not suffer from the wireworms? I read somewhere that brassica crops are safe from wireworms, but I've read elsewhere that they are a favourite food! I'd like to plant something, I can't stand the thought of so much unused square footage in my backyard. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

O.K., some-one is bound to say I'm wrong but....I was told to use B.T.K. and soak the ground with it. I tried it on an area that had wire worms and they disapeared.

    Coincidence?

Wireworms are usually at their worst in freshly dug up sod. They will probably be much less of a problem this year. However, they do live for several years; so it may take a while before they cease to be a problem.
